Lace, The difference between Silk Base, Swiss , Transparent and HD
What is lace?
Lace is a fabric material that is delicate. It is made from different fabrics, for wigs the type of materials used are silk base, swiss, french and HD. Lace is used to give the look or mimic the scalp. Individual strands of hair are inserted or ventilated into the lace to create this part of the wig.
Silk base is a material that is thicker than the others. With silk base the closure or frontal already comes in different skin colors which makes it hard to customize. This material will not lay as flat as the others due to its thickness. But because of its thickness it will last longer. It usually does not require bleaching due to the based silk fabric. It does imitate the scalp without needing to change it such as bleaching and tinting. I would not recommend silk base for a sew-in or wig install due to the fact it is hard to customize and does not lay flat which makes it hard for your stylist or wig maker to work with. I would recommend silk base wigs for beginner wig wearers because it doesn't require much maintenance.
Swiss Lace
Swiss lace is very durable but also thin. It is also one of the top quality lace used to make wigs , closures and frontals. It is soft to the touch and breathable. The thinness is similar to HD but it will last longer, its longevity can go up to 2 years. This is one of the lace that can be customized to a wig wearer's skin color and will lay flat, giving a realistic look. It also comes in different colors such as beige, light brown, brown and black. This is another great lace for beginners because the maintenance care is low because it can stand more tension.
Transparent Lace
Transparent lace is only a reference to the color of the lace. It comes in 3 types of lace such as Swiss, French and Korean. Swiss is the most popular and commonly used by wig makers. French is not as popular because it is not as comfortable or breathable. It is also thicker and harder. Korean is the cheapest of them all. It is used in low quality wigs because it is rough to the touch and hard to install.
HD Lace
HD stands for High Definition. This lace is invisible and undetectable when placed on the scalp. Which gives a natural and invisible hairline. HD lace is the lightest and softest of all the lace. It has been around for years in the movie and entertainment industry because it can not be seen through lights and on cameras. It is very delicate which is why it melts into the skin. It can be customized to match skin tone with bleaching and plucking of the knots. But without customizing it still blends well. Wigs made with this lace are more expensive because hd lace is the highest of quality among all the laces. And it gives the most closest results to the look of your skin. But the con is that this lace is only meant for short term use because it is so delicate and fragile. You will not get years of usage out of this lace due to fraying. I do not recommend this lace for everyday wear. If you have the budget and only wear or keep your wigs for a short term then this is the lace for you.
Which one should you choose?
You should choose the one that fits best into your lifestyle.
- Silk base would be best for the get up and go girl. Who wants to keep it as simple as possible and don't mind the thickness of this lace. Also for brand new wig wearers and for ones with a lower budget.
- Swiss or Transparent is best for a woman who wants her wigs to be breathable but also non detectable. Wants the hairline of the wig to easily blend into her scalp and last a long time.
- HD is for a woman who has a higher budget and wants her wigs to be flawless you can find this lace on my website Flawless Touch Wigs
